Why Children Connect Differently
Children experience therapy differently than adults, and that difference shapes everything we do.
Connection First
Meaningful change begins with a genuine relationship, not a treatment plan.
No Pressure to Talk
Children are never expected to open up the moment they walk through the door.
Play as Language
Play, curiosity, and creativity are how children safely explore big feelings.
Seen & Accepted
Every child is supported for exactly who they are, without judgment.
Most adults choose counselling because they're looking for support, answers, or change. Children rarely make that decision themselves. They often arrive because a parent, caregiver, teacher, or another trusted adult recognized they needed support.
Many children don't fully understand why they're coming to therapy. Some feel nervous. Some are unsure what to expect. Others aren't ready to talk at all.
That's okay.
I don't believe children should be expected to open up the moment they walk through the door. Instead, I believe meaningful change begins with connection.
Before children can explore difficult emotions, learn new coping skills, or work through life's challenges, they first need to feel genuinely seen, understood, accepted, and free to be themselves. Trust isn't something that's expected. It's something that's earned through patience, consistency, and authentic connection.
That's why I never rush the therapeutic process.
Our first sessions are often filled with play, creativity, curiosity, laughter, and simply getting to know one another. While it may look like we're "just playing," something much more important is happening. We're building the relationship that allows therapy to become meaningful.
As children begin to feel comfortable, they naturally become more willing to share their thoughts, express difficult emotions, explore challenges, and try new ways of coping. Real growth happens when children feel connected to the person sitting across from them.
Children and teens may also connect through play, conversation, metaphor, and Narrative Therapy, gentle ways of exploring big feelings and identity without pressure.
At Sunny Spot, I don't see the therapeutic relationship as something that happens before therapy. I see it as the foundation that allows therapy to work.
Every child deserves to feel excited to come, understood without judgment, supported for exactly who they are, and reminded that they are capable of more than they ever imagined.
