Youth & Teen Counselling in Port Coquitlam

A confidential, non-judgmental, trauma-informed space for teens to navigate life's pressures.

Sunny Spot offers youth and teen counselling from its Port Coquitlam office, welcoming families from Coquitlam, Port Moody, and across the Tri-Cities. Sessions are relationship-first, trauma-informed, and neurodivergent-affirming, with space for teens to talk, reflect, and move at their own pace.

Navigating the Teen Years with Evidence-Based Therapy

Adolescence is a time of immense change. Teens face intense academic pressure, shifting peer dynamics, identity questions, and heightened emotional responses.

Sheila provides counselling for youth and teens in a collaborative, conversational space where teens feel respected as the experts of their own lives. We support youth experiencing:

  • Anxiety, overthinking, and social anxiety
  • School stress, burnout, and perfectionism
  • ADHD and executive functioning challenges
  • Autism, including masking and sensory or social overwhelm
  • Emotional regulation and big emotions
  • Friendships, bullying, and peer conflict
  • Self-esteem and identity exploration
  • Parent-teen difficulties and family conflict
  • Low mood, depression, and trauma recovery

Our Approach

We use Talk Therapy combined with Narrative Therapy to help teens separate themselves from their problems (e.g., “I am not anxious; I am experiencing anxiety”). The teen is never the problem, and never reduced to a label. Trust is built gradually and at the teen’s pace, while parents and schools may be involved in ways that support safety and structure without taking over the teen’s space.

Counselling Support for Teens Who Feel Anxious, Overwhelmed, or Burned Out

Many teens arrive carrying more than they can name. School pressure, overthinking, perfectionism, and the constant pull of social and academic demands can leave a teen feeling wired, exhausted, or quietly burned out. Some teens worry about grades, friendships, or the future. Others feel a low, persistent hum of stress that makes even ordinary days feel heavy.

Counselling gives teens a calm, non-judgmental place to slow down, notice what is happening inside, and build practical ways to manage anxiety and overwhelm. Sessions move at the teen’s pace, with room to talk, reflect, or simply breathe. Explore our school anxiety and emotional regulation pages for more.

Neurodivergent-Affirming Support for ADHD and Autistic Teens

Sunny Spot’s approach is neurodivergent-affirming. That means we do not treat ADHD or autism as problems to be hidden or fixed. Instead, we build on a teen’s strengths while supporting the areas that feel hard — like executive functioning, sensory or social overwhelm, masking, and emotional regulation.

For some teens, the effort of masking all day is exhausting. Counselling can offer a space to unmask safely, understand their own needs, and develop self-advocacy. Learn more on our ADHD, autism support, and executive functioning pages.

What Teen Counselling Can Help With

Teen counselling can support a wide range of experiences. It is not about diagnosis or outcome guarantees — it is about giving a teen a reliable space to understand themselves and build skills that fit who they are. Common areas include:

  • Anxiety, overthinking, and social anxiety
  • School stress, burnout, and perfectionism
  • ADHD and executive functioning challenges
  • Autism, masking, and sensory or social overwhelm
  • Emotional regulation and big emotions
  • Friendships, bullying, and peer conflict
  • Self-esteem, identity, and self-advocacy
  • Parent-teen communication and family conflict

How Privacy and Parent Involvement Work

Teen privacy is treated with care and discussed clearly at the beginning of counselling. Sheila explains what can remain private, the legal and ethical limits of confidentiality, and how parents or caregivers may be involved in ways that support safety without taking over the teen’s space.

This balance helps teens feel safe enough to be honest, while keeping families informed and supported. Parents and caregivers are welcome partners in the process, and the way they are included is shaped around each teen’s needs and circumstances.

What the First Sessions May Feel Like

The first sessions are about building trust, not collecting answers. A teen may not know what to say, and that is completely expected. Sessions might include conversation, drawing, movement, or simply sitting together while trust grows.

Over time, many teens begin to share more, notice patterns, and try out new ways of handling stress, relationships, and big feelings. Progress is rarely a straight line, and there is no pressure to perform or “open up” on a timeline. The pace belongs to the teen.

Professional Collaboration

A child's growth is supported best when their whole village works together. Sheila actively collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to ensure consistent, wrap-around support across all environments. We partner closely with:
